Vacuum Coating and Surface Modification

Investment in PXP, a company focusing on the development of "chalcopyrite-type" solar cells, a promising candidate for next-generation solar cells.

We expect this to be compatible with our main products and to be utilized in mass production using our thin film vacuum coating system

ShinMaywa Industries, Ltd. (Head Office: Takarazuka City, Hyogo Prefecture;Representative Director, President and CEO: Takashi Kunihara) is pleased to announce that it has decided to invest in  PXP Corporation  (Head Office: Sagamihara City, Kanagawa Prefecture; President and Representative Director: Satoru Kuriyagawa; hereinafter referred to as "PXP").

Currently, PXP is working on developing "chalcopyrite" type solar cells, which have lightweight and flexible properties, as well as "tandem" type solar cells that combine chalcopyrite with perovskite type.

In the future, next-generation solar cells are expected to be used in a variety of environments, but the market that PXP is focusing on  five points listed below.

  1. 1 Satellite
  2. 2. Mobility (for EVs)
  3. 3. Mobile phone base stations, digital signage, etc.
  4. 4. Industrial roofs (buildings with low load-bearing capacity)
  5. 5. Outdoor activities and disaster preparedness

Among these, the "industrial roof" market, as mentioned in "④" above, is expected to see particularly high demand. Factories and other industrial buildings consume a lot of electricity, while their structural load-bearing capacity is low. Therefore, manufacturing companies considering installing solar panels on their building roofs are considered to be the biggest target market for the time being.

1. Intent of investment

In addition to the above expectations regarding market growth, we decided to make this investment based on the following two points.

  • PXP's focus is on "chalcopyrite-type" solar cells, which are lightweight and flexible, and also consider cost competitiveness, thus combining functionality and economic rationality with a view to social implementation.
  • PXP has established a low-cost mass production process using a dry deposition method (vacuum deposition), and is considering applying our thin film vacuum coating system to that process.
