Envrionmental observation test using the fixed-wing unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) "XU-S" conducted in Awaji City

December 3, 2020

ShinMaywa Industries, Ltd. (Head Office: Takarazuka City, Hyogo Prefecture, President & CEO Isogawa Tatsuyuki) announced that from November 30 (Mon) ~ December 2 (Wed), 2020, in collaboration with Japan Weather Co., Ltd. and Kobe University, the Company's the fixed-wing unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) "XU-S (Experimental Unmanned / Utility aircraft by ) We conducted an environmental observation test using ShinMaywa)"* in Ikuho Niijima, Awaji City, Hyogo Prefecture.

This test is part of the Hyogo Prefecture-commissioned project "Advanced Utilization of Drones in 2020 (Public-Private Collaboration Field)," which uses unmanned aircraft (drones) to measure the distribution of air pollutants in the sky. Japan Weather Co., Ltd. was in charge of calibrating and operating the measuring instruments, Kobe University was in charge of analyzing the acquired data, and our company was in charge of installing the measuring instruments on unmanned aircraft and operating them in the demonstration tests.

In the demonstration test, an unmanned aircraft equipped with an ozone concentration measuring device, a PM2.5 concentration measuring device, and a weather sensor was flown to approximately 500 meters above the ground at different times of the day to measure the concentration of air pollutants, temperature, humidity, etc. Vertical distribution (data by altitude) was obtained. In the future, it is hoped that highly accurate forecasts will become possible by analyzing the acquired data and understanding diurnal variations in the three-dimensional structure of air pollution.

With the success of this test as a starting point, we will continue to aim to utilize unmanned aircraft in a wide range of fields such as observation, surveillance, and communications.

  • * "XU-S" is powered by a LiPo (lithium ion polymer) battery that does not produce exhaust gas, so it can minimize the influence of air pollutants on measurement results. In addition, because it has the ability to stay in the air for long periods of time, observation flights over a wide range of areas and altitudes are possible.
