28 Aircraft Manufactured by the Kawanishi Machinery Company Aircraft Department
The Kawanishi Machinery Company Aircraft Department, which is how the ShinMaywa Group got its start, will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the founding of the business tomorrow, February 1.
It was 100 years ago in 1920 that the company’s first originally designed aircraft, the Kawanishi Type-1, was born.
The company’s passion for aircraft development never abated and resulted in the development of a number of high-performance aircraft, with a total of 28 aircraft representing 10 models being produced in merely nine years, from 1920 to 1928. They were dubbed “Kawanishi-type” aircraft.
Once the company’s technical prowess received recognition and it was expected to receive an order from the Navy, the Aircraft Department was spun off from Kawanishi Machinery Company on November 5, 1928, becoming Kawanishi Aircraft Company Limited.
During a period when aircraft were not common, the persistence that gave shape to our desire to build aircraft with our own hands is what set our group’s 100-year history in motion. This is an essential part of our DNA that we will continue to pass on going forward.
