[Series] How the US-2 is made (15)
Close coverage by a professional writer
Finally completed! The moment when aircraft was born, "rollout''!
The "US-2'' has been completely outfitted and its operation checked at the factory, and it is pulled out of the factory. In the world of aircraft manufacturing, this is called a "rollout," and it is considered a special moment in aircraft 's life, along with the first flight.
No special ceremony is held during the normal rollout of US-2, but for the amphibian aircraft craftsmen, it is a deeply emotional event that only happens once every few years. They say that they feel both nervous and proud as they watch US-2 being slowly and carefully pulled out. Once the US-2 is pulled out, it will be placed next to the refueling equipment in the factory and loaded with fuel. Next, the engine will not start, and the fuel will be completely drained. This is done to wash away any foreign matter that may remain in the fuel pipes from the fuel tank to the engine, and this process is called "flushing." In addition, this work is also performed on all lines where oils and fats pass, such as hydraulic piping. It's a waste, but there is no substitute for safety.
Once all electrical, hydraulic, and fuel system checks have been completed, start the engine for the first time. Adjusting the balance between the four engines is very important and apparently difficult. Of course, we also visually check for any abnormalities after driving.
In addition, the 7th "US-2" is the 50th flying boat newly built by ShinMaywa Industries (23 "PS-1", 20 "US-1" and "US-1A", US-2" x 7 aircraft). To commemorate this, a grand rollout ceremony was held on February 20, 2020.
You can watch the rollout ceremony on YouTube's "ShinMaywa Channel." Please check it! (Search for " The 50th Flying Boat ROLL OUT ")
