Sewage storage

Temporary storage of wastewater at basement level

Wastewater from large commercial buildings and condominium blocks is held in underground drainage pits.

What is a building drainage pit?

A building drainage pit is a temporary holding tank for sewage generated in the building.
Normally, gravity causes sewage from aboveground to naturally flow down through wastewater pipes and into the sewer system. However, sewage generated below the level of sewer pipes must be pumped up to them.
Because this requires a place to temporarily store sewage, buildings with underground facilities are built with drainage pits (sewage tanks).

Odor control

Suppressing odor generation with air

An insufficient concentration of oxygen in a drainage pit leads to the generation of hydrogen sulfide, causing a foul odor. Feeding air into the sewage keeps the oxygen level up, preventing sulfide generation and reducing odor.
