Vacuum Coating and Surface Modification

Developed diamond coating system

October 23, 2018

ShinMaywa Industries, Ltd. (Head Office: Takarazuka City, Hyogo Prefecture, President: Isogawa Tatsuyuki) has recently developed a diamond coating system that applies coating to improve the wear resistance of cutting tools made of difficult-to-cut materials. did.
This device will be exhibited on a panel at the 29th Japan International Machine Tool Fair (JIMTOF2018) to be held at Tokyo Big Sight from November 1st, and sales will begin from April 2019.

Diamond coating is applied to cutting tools for difficult-to-cut materials such as CFRP (carbon fiber composite), graphite, aluminum alloys, and cemented carbide, as well as special mechanical seals and carbide molds.
Currently, there are few manufacturers in Japan that manufacture and sell diamond coating equipment, and most domestic tool manufacturers and other diamond coating users have introduced equipment from European and American manufacturers, and there is a strong need for domestic manufacturers to provide equipment and support. That's what I'm doing. In addition, in our aircraft business, we supply CFRP products to major aircraft manufacturers and consume large quantities of diamond-coated tools. However, diamond-coated tools have a relatively high unit price, and the tool lifespan due to improved coating performance. As improvements in performance will also lead to cost reductions, we began this development with a view to contributing internally to the technology.

The newly developed diamond coating system employs the "hot filament CVD method,'' and has a unique design that takes advantage of the technological capabilities we have cultivated in the vacuum business, and is designed to suit each "material to be coated'' and "application.'' We have completed the "coating recipe" and achieved an optimal diamond coating with high wear resistance and adhesion.
In order to strengthen our vacuum business, we added DIAVAC Limited, which manufactures vacuum equipment and equipment, to our group in April 2018. ”, and one of our features is that we can work together as a group to provide the optimal method to meet your needs.

Additionally, since the ion etching system (sold separately), which has been on sale since 2015, can remove almost all coatings on carbide materials without damaging the materials, the newly developed diamond coating system has been added to the lineup. With this addition, we are now able to consistently provide the surface treatment technology necessary for remanufacturing carbide tools, such as applying and removing coatings.

Demand for CFRP products is rapidly increasing for industries that are expected to continue to grow, such as aircraft and automobile industries, and demand for diamond-coated tools is also expected to increase.
Furthermore, as diamond coating technology can be expected to be applied to fields such as special electrodes used in electrolytic cells and semiconductor devices, we are working together with DIAVAC Limited to develop this technology in these fields. , we will leverage synergistic effects in terms of development and sales.
