ShinMaywa Industries participates in hydrogen supply chain business

We will work on the hydrogen business in partnership with Hrein Energy Inc., which has hydrogen storage and supply technology using organic hydrides.

May 12, 2023

ShinMaywa Industries, Ltd. (Head Office: Takarazuka City, Hyogo Prefecture, President: Isogawa Tatsuyuki) concluded an agreement with Hrein Energy Inc. (Head Office: Sapporo City, Hokkaido, President: Akira Koikeda, hereinafter referred to as "Hrein") in August 2022 to jointly develop products comprising the hydrogen supply chain. The two companies have begun experiments using a prototype of the "dehydrogenation device" developed by Hrein. The two companies plan to enhance the perfection of the prototype unit and establish a sales and mass production system for the new hydrogen supply unit, taking advantage of the compactness of the unit, which no other company can offer.

1. Background of the contract with Hrein

Our company is currently promoting a long-term management plan [SG-Vision 2030] that aims to materialize our "Long-term vision" with 2030 as the target year. The New the Business strategies Headquarters, which was established in 2022 with the aim of achieving sales of 400 billion yen or more, which is one of the goals of the plan, is exploring new businesses that go beyond the framework of existing businesses. Co-creation with companies is a part of this.

Hrein is a corporation established in 2001 that specializes in hydrogen energy, which promotes the spread of renewable energy, and facilitates the storage and transportation of MCH (methylcyclohexane), which is produced by catalytically reacting hydrogen with toluene. We have equipment using organic hydride technology. By utilizing the company's technology, clean hydrogen produced from overseas and domestic renewable energy (solar, wind, biomass, etc.) is converted into MCH, which is highly stable and suitable for transportation, and stored, and then transported to the site of use. In turn, hydrogen can be extracted from MCH to serve key parts of the supply chain.

フレイン社の技術を活用した、効率的な水素輸送の実現イメージ図In addition, Hrein has succeeded in commercializing a "small power generation unit" using hydrogen, which can be used transportation equipment (industrial vehicles, construction machinery, ships, It is also expected to be applied to port machinery, etc.).

Society is highly interested in hydrogen energy as a countermeasure against CO2 emissions, and to meet these expectations, it is essential to commercialize products that can be used safely in a variety of situations, and to develop a production and service system that can provide a stable supply of such products.

We believe that we have the production technology to achieve this, and that we are also considering the development of dehydrogenation equipment for transportation equipment as one of our future targets for this supply chain. We decided that this was an area where we could make use of our knowledge, and concluded a joint development agreement last year.

Regarding various experiments using Hrein's "dehydrogenation equipment" (prototype) that we have recently started, the initial deadline is 2024, and we will verify phenomena such as safety, high efficiency, and productivity. At the same time, the two companies will work together to identify issues and demand for mass production and aim for commercialization in 2025.
