ShinMaywa Industries, Ltd. (Head Office: Takarazuka City, Hyogo Prefecture, President & CEO Isogawa Tatsuyuki) announced that our the fixed-wing unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) "XU-S (Experimental Unmanned) / Utility aircraft by ShinMaywa)" was lent to us.

The fixed-wing unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) "XU-S" during test flight

This test is a part of a SCOPE project sponsored by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications and conducted by Nagaoka University of Technology to demonstrate the superiority of the 169 MHz band for unmanned aircraft (drone) operation and to verify the possibility of wide-area communication by using a relay station on the ground. MHI decided to lend its "XU-S" for the verification test because of its "long-dwell time capability ".
In the verification test, after taking off from Sado Airport, the autonomous flight function flew several missions, ascending and descending between 30m and 140m above Lake Kamo, and landing at Sado Airport.

For details regarding this exam, please refer to the disclosure materials provided by Nagaoka University of Technology.

"XU-S" flying around Lake Kamo

The "XU-S" is environmental friendly and powered by LiPo (lithium ion polymer) batteries that do not produce exhaust gases, and is characterized by its ability to stay in the air for long periods of time, making it ideal for observation, monitoring, communications, etc. We aim to apply this technology in a wide range of fields.

In addition to the recent test in Niigata Prefecture, our company is also planning to conduct a test in the "FY2020 Drone Advance Utilization Project" sponsored by Hyogo Prefecture.

  • * Prior to this test, our company conducted a performance verification test of "XU-S" on October 22nd (Thursday), following last year's subsidy and provision of a flight location from Niigata City. We have confirmed its ability to stay in the air for a long time of 3 hours and 42 minutes and fly 135 km.
