The fixed-wing Unmanned Aerial Vehicle XU-S Successful Extended Flight Test

ShinMaywa Industries, Ltd. (Head Office: Takarazuka City, Hyogo Prefecture, President & CEO Isogawa Tatsuyuki) conducted a flight test of the the fixed-wing unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) "XU-S (Experimental Unmanned / Utility aircraft by ShinMaywa)" in Niigata City, Niigata Prefecture on Thursday, October 22, 2020. It succeeded in a long continuous flight.
This is the second time, following last year, that the test will be conducted with the help of subsidies and flight locations provided by Niigata City.
The "XU-S" is environmental friendly and powered by a LiPo (lithium ion polymer) battery that does not produce exhaust gas, and is characterized by its "long-time airborne ability", and is capable of carrying out various tasks such as observation, monitoring, and communication. We aim to apply this technology in a wide range of fields. This time, in addition to staying in the air for a long time of 3 hours and 42 minutes, the aircraft succeeded in flying 135 km, confirming that it has the ability to fly beyond visual line of sight in uninhabited areas.
In the future, this aircraft will be lent to the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications' commissioned research (SCOPE) conducted by Nagaoka University of Technology and the Global Observation System Study Group *, and will also be used in the field of environmental observation (air pollution) that is easily affected by exhaust gas. We will also proceed with demonstration experiments assuming its use.
